Based in Hornchurch, Essex but operating all over London and the South East Hornchurch Pet Services incorporating Hornchurch Animal Rescue is a small home-based organisation run by Donna Evans. Donna has many years experience of owning and working with animals and is a campaigner for various issues concerning animal welfare including compulsory microchipping for dogs, subsidised neutering programs and legislation for all animal breeders.

As well as helping homeless animals Donna runs fun workshops for children educating on responsible pet ownership and promotes The Dogs Trust education programs in schools.

Donna is a fully qualified Kennel Club registered  'PetLog' microchip implanter and member of the Independant Positive Dog Training Association.  All cats and dogs dealt with by H.A.R are microchipped as standard.

Hornchurch Pet Services uses positive reinforcement methods of training only including Clicker training, the most up-to-date and only PROVEN safe method of training which can be used with many animals. Training using dominance based or negative punishment methods can have adverse effects on already traumatised rescue animals. An animal who learns through fear of punishment is ultimately not a happy animal!

Animal Abandonment in the U.K has reached epidemic proportions with rescues and kennels full to bursting. In 2009 over 100,000 dogs were abandoned or seized by the authorities.

Many people buy puppies without appreciating the time and financial investment involved in keeping such an animal. Adding to the problem is the huge trend for dogs as fashion accessories and, even worse, as status symbols. Strong, muscular bull breed dogs need experienced handlers and can become dangerous in the wrong hands. Huge numbers of this type of dog, particularly the Staffordshire Bull Terrier have been bred in people's homes and abandoned when they have outgrown the cute puppy stage and become more difficult to handle. The plight of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a very sad one with rescue's becoming full of them and many being put to sleep. This situation is partly to blame for Battersea Dogs & Cats Home closing their doors and operating a waiting list for the first time in history due to lack of space.

Hornchurch Animal Rescue is a small home run, self-funded organisation. We run via a network of fully insured volunteer foster homes who temporarily care for animals in need and are always in need of more volunteers. Please visit the 'Enquiries' page for more details. Foster homes are provided with food and the necessary equipment wherever possible.

We try to rehome with minimum disruption and stress to the animal involved. Animals taken into our care will be treated with as much care, respect and love as our own pets. During the rehoming process we will endeavour to modify certain behavioural problems in dogs such as bad toilet training, separation anxiety, pulling on lead.

Animal adopters will have access to our highly qualified animal behaviourist/trainer Charlotte Wagner of "The Canine Paws Training Academy" www.caninepaws.com. Charlotte holds specially discounted classes for rescue dogs. She also offers one-on-one sessions and lends invaluable advice. Hornchurch Pet Services/Animal Rescue advocates the latest proven 'Positive Reinforcement' training methods only. Dogs who are of particular concern will be fully assessed by Charlotte. The fostering / adoption process may involve a short period of assessment with the behaviourist within the home.

Hornchurch Animal Rescue temperament assesses dogs using a variation of tried and tested methods including the Sue Sternberg 'Assess-A-Pet' module.  This enables us to find the most suitable environment for the dog and plan any necessary conditioning or training.  We encourage all of our adopters to partake in training, sometimes making it a stipulation of adoption. We aim to give dogs the best possible chance of a secure future  We do our very best to ensure everyone's safety, welfare and most of all happiness!

A reputable rescue should always health check, provide flea and worming treatment and neuter and microchip dogs and cats as standard. We agree with and adhere to this policy so as to ensure the animal has the best start in their new life. There are many reasons why rescue animals, particulary cats and dogs, should be neutered. One of the main reasons is to reduce the number of unwanted animals that animal welfare organisations have to deal with every year. This is both a financial drain and a large commitment in time which could easily be reduced if more animals were neutered. Ensuring that a new pet is microchipped and neutered is an important part of the adoption process.  Adoption fees apply.
